I was raised about 90 miles south of Jackson and we made the trip several times. It can be pretty exciting depending on the time of year. Spring brings runoff from the melted snow pack and the river is pretty gnarly. Several people over the years (including rafting guides) have lost their lives when the rafts either tip over or people fly out. The water is also very cold in the spring, so if you don't get out quickly, hypothermia sets in. Later on (June, July, and August) the river settles down a little and it is a spectacular trip. A 45 year old would have no trouble handling the river in the summer. There are many reputable guide services based in Jackson. Jackson also has an airport that is serviced by most of the major airlines. If you ever wanted a trip to remember, the Snake in Wyoming, or the Salmon River in Idaho are two of the best. Good luck and I hope you make the trip.
